RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey commented. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
